This drill teaches the back step guard pass from various entries, focusing on clearing the opponent's legs and transitioning to dominant positions or arm attacks.
Drill Steps
1
Gain outside control.
- Step to your opponent's side
- grab their calf or pants
- place your head on their chest
- stretch their leg out

Execute the back step.
- As your opponent turns in, back step around their legs
- push their top knee down
- hook your bottom foot behind their knee
- jump your trail leg across

Establish top control.
- Land in a dominant position after clearing their legs
- secure side control
- transition to knee-on-belly
- block their hip to prevent escapes

Attack the arm from the back step.
- Attack their arm if you land sitting on it
- go for a kimura
- transition to an omoplata
- maintain strong arm control

Perform an alternative back step entry.
- From a single-leg sitting position, enter the back step
- get a cross-collar grip with your far hand
- grab their knee with your near hand
- swivel your foot to back step
