Major Outside Reap / Osoto Gari

Gi

This drill focuses on mastering head control with your collar hand, a crucial detail for effectively executing Osoto Gari and preventing your opponent from escaping or countering.

Drill Steps

1

Grip the opponent's collar.

  • Grab high on their lapel with your dominant hand
  • Ensure a deep grip for effective control
2

Pin their head to your body.

  • Use your collar grip to connect their head to your chest or shoulder
  • Create tightness across their jaw to prevent head movement
3

Block all head escape attempts.

  • Prevent their head from moving over or under your controlling arm
  • Elevate your elbow to block over their arm
  • Connect your bicep to their head to block under your arm
4

Drive into the opponent.

  • Push your weight forward, maintaining constant head control
  • Off-balance them by getting their weight on their toes
5

Execute the Osoto Gari.

  • Hook their leg and drive through to complete the throw
  • Maintain continuous head pressure throughout the entire throw
6

Avoid any gaps in control.

  • Ensure there is no space between your hand and their head
  • A gap allows them to shift weight and resist
  • Immediately re-establish tight control if a gap appears
