Seoi Nage / Drop Shoulder Throw

Gi

A dynamic standing throw where you drop to your knees to create leverage and throw your opponent over your shoulder.

Drill Steps

Establish your dominant grips.

  • Secure a lapel grip high on their chest
  • Get a strong sleeve grip on the opposite arm

Create an off-balance forward.

  • Pull your opponent onto their toes
  • Use a strong 'kuzushi' to break their posture

Step in deep with your lead foot.

  • Place your foot between or slightly outside their feet
  • Begin to turn your hips towards their side

Drop to your knee or both knees.

  • Drop to the knee on the side of your lapel grip
  • Maintain a straight back and upright posture

Turn your hips and load your opponent.

  • Rotate your back towards their chest
  • Pull them tightly onto your lower back or hips

Project and complete the throw.

  • Extend your legs and lift with your back
  • Drive your head and chest up to guide them over
