Gorilla Pass

The Gorilla Pass Drill is a dynamic movement drill designed to build strong guard-passing mechanics, balance, and rhythm.

Drill Steps

Partner Setup

  • Partner lies on their back in open guard
  • Legs are relaxed (not actively framing or attacking)
  • This is a cooperative drill, not live resistance
  • You can also use a gym ball instead of a partner

Set Your Posts

  • Stand off to one side of your partner in open guard
  • Inside hand goes between the legs, make a fist, post it on the mat
  • Outside hand posts on the knee or hip

Swing Your Body

  • Shift your weight into your posts
  • Swing your hips and torso to the opposite side
  • Be sure to land the outside leg first
  • Keep your head over your base
  • Hands stay posted while your body moves

Switch and Repeat

  • Switch your hands as you arrive on the new side
  • Flow side to side continuously
