X-Guard Pass to Back Control via Crab Ride

No-Gi

This no-gi drill teaches how to take the back using a crab ride entry from an outside standing position, pulling the opponent flat to the floor rather than stacking them.

Drill Steps

1

Establish initial control and position.

  • Grab the opponent's far hip with your right hand.
  • Grab their near hip or waistband with your left hand.
  • Rotate them to open their side.
2

Pull your opponent's hips to the floor.

  • Ensure they are flat on their back or side.
  • Maintain control with your hand grips, avoiding stacking them.
3

Insert the primary crab hook and leg grip.

  • Place your right foot shallowly behind their far leg as a hook.
  • Your right hand reaches deep to scoop their far leg.
4

Initiate a forward roll over your right shoulder.

  • Roll away from your opponent's head.
  • Keep your right leg extended, maintaining the crab hook.
5

Elevate your opponent with your left leg.

  • Bring your left foot high onto their near hip.
  • Use your right foot to pull them up as you roll.
6

Complete the back take transition.

  • Continue rolling to sit them up directly in front of you.
  • Slide both hooks securely into position.
7

Secure the back control.

  • Establish a strong seatbelt grip (underhook with right arm, overhook with left arm).
  • Keep your hooks tight to prevent escape.
