Back Control from Standing Position via Arm Drag

No-Gi

This drill focuses on taking the back from a standing position by combining an arm drag with a foot sweep to off-balance your opponent.

Drill Steps

1

Start in a neutral standing wrestling stance.

  • Maintain a head-to-head position with your opponent.
2

Secure a deep grip on your opponent's arm.

  • Drive your entire wrist high into their armpit.
  • Grip firmly with your whole hand, not just fingertips.
3

Outside step and pull your opponent onto their toes.

  • Step past their outside leg with your lead foot.
  • Pull their arm across your body, bringing your shoulder to theirs.
4

Place your opposite foot on their far leg for a sweep.

  • Position the sole of your foot on their ankle or shin.
  • Use your foot as a barrier to disrupt their balance.
5

Drive your hips forward and rotate your body.

  • Maintain hip-to-hip contact with your opponent.
  • Rotate as you continue the arm drag and sweep motion.
6

Get behind your opponent's elbows and access their far hip.

  • Utilize their stumble to move quickly to their back.
7

Secure a strong rear body lock.

  • Control their hips to solidify your back position.
